4th Year Fall Semester - Furniture Design
Named Forma 3 for its three pieces and three angles, this chair was focused around being simple and planar, yet celebrating the wood and its joints. The chair can easily be broken apart into 3 pieces to carry, move, and store it. This process was challenging, fruitful, and full of learning new skills.
In the initial design process, it was vital for us to understand the human body and how it fits in furniture. I studied the different variations of angles and heights of lounge chairs.
The main joints in the chair are two half joints that join the back of the chair with central base, and the joints that join the seat to the central base.
The angular edges of the planar pieces fit seamlessly against the chair back and ground, making it a seamless finish.
The chair was finished with danish oil to bring out the rich variation if the wormy, curly maple I chose to work with.
